Pre-School

Sustainability and Climate Action Plan

🌱Our Commitment to a Greener Future

At Pre-School, we believe that even the youngest children can be inspired to love and care for the natural world. We are committed to taking meaningful climate action and embedding sustainability into every part of our setting — from daily routines to learning experiences.

🌍 Our Goals

We are working towards a future that is:

Low-waste

Carbon-aware

Nature-connected

Child-empowered

We aim to model environmentally responsible practices and create opportunities for children to engage in sustainable thinking from an early age.

♻️ What We’re Doing

1. Reducing Waste

Composting food scraps and using the compost in our garden

Using reusable containers, cloths, and nappies where possible

Encouraging families to pack waste-free lunches

Avoiding single-use plastics

2. Energy & Water Conservation

Turning off lights and electronics when not in use

Using energy-efficient lighting and appliances

Teaching children to conserve water during handwashing and play

3. Sustainable Learning

Nature walks, gardening, and outdoor play to connect with the environment

Stories, songs, and activities that focus on the planet, recycling, and caring for animals

Celebrating Earth Day, World Environment Day, and local eco-events

4. Green Procurement

Choosing eco-friendly toys and supplies

Buying local, seasonal produce where possible for snacks and meals

Partnering with ethical and sustainable suppliers

5. Family & Community Engagement

Encouraging families to walk or cycle to the setting

Running uniform swaps

Sharing green tips and resources with families in newsletters

🌿 Involving Children in Climate Action

We believe that small hands can make a big difference. We empower children to:

Care for plants and wildlife

Recycle and reuse materials

Ask questions and explore how their actions affect the world

Be proud of their role in looking after the planet

📈 Measuring Our Impact

We regularly review our progress through:

Sustainability audits

Staff and child input

Family feedback

Reviewing our carbon footprint and setting achievable targets

💡 What’s Next?

We are continually learning and growing in our climate journey. Upcoming actions include:

Installing a rainwater collection system

Adding more native plants to our garden

🤝 Join Us!

We welcome ideas, collaboration, and support from families, staff, and the wider community. Together, we can create a greener future — one small step at a time.
